An Additive Model to Predict the Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene Blends Made by Virgin and Reprocessed Components

2021

In this work, an additive model for the prediction of the rheological and mechanical properties of monopolymer blends made by virgin and reprocessed components is proposed. A polypropylene sample has been reprocessed more times in an extruder and monopolymer blends have been prepared by simulating an industrial process. The scraps are exposed to regrinding and are melt reprocessed before mixing with the virgin polymer. The reprocessed polymer is, then, subjected to some thermomechanical degradation. Rheological and mechanical experimental data have been compared with the theoretical predictions. The results obtained showed that the values of this simple additive model are a very good fit fo…

Femtosecond up-conversion technique for probing the charge transfer in a P3HT : PCBM blend via photoluminescence quenching

2009

We report on an experimental study of the charge transfer dynamics in a P3HT : PCBM blend by means of a femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion technique. Using two-photon excitation we probe the exciton dynamics in P3HT and a P3HT : PCBM blend with a weight ratio of 1 : 1 at excitation densities of up to 6 × 1018 cm−3. In both samples we find strongly nonexponential decay traces compatible with (i) diffusion-limited exciton–exciton annihilation and (ii) diffusion-limited donor–acceptor charge transfer in the polymer blend. Additionally, our results indicate that in the P3HT : PCBM blend about 50% of the photogenerated excitons undergo a prompt charge transfer process on a time scale of abou…

On the effect of pressure on the phase transition of polymer blends and polymer solutions: Oligostyrene–n-alkane systems

2001

Critical temperatures of some binary solutions of weakly interacting low molecular weight polystyrenes dissolved in linear alkanes (oligoethylenes) were measured over the range 0.1 to 100 MPa. While (dT/dP)crit along the upper critical solution (UCS) locus for a “typical blend” is positive, and for the “ typical solution” can be either positive or negative (but is usually negative), there is no essential difference between blend and solution. Rather, the difference in sign is a consequence of the location of the hypercritical point (that point in (T,P)crit space where (dT/dP)crit changes sign, [(dT/dP)crit = 0 and (d2T/dP2)crit>0], also called the double critical point, DCP), which is norma…

Monte carlo studies of phase transitions in polymer blends and block copolymer melts

1994

The unmixing transition of both symmetrical polymer blends AB (i.e. chain lengthsNA=NB=N) and asymmetrical ones (NB/NA=2,3) is studied by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model. Combination of semi-grand-canonical simulation techniques, «histogram reweighting» and finitesize scaling allows an accurate location of the coexistence curve in the critical region. The variation of the critical temperature with chain length (N) is studied and compared to theoretical predictions. For the symmetrical case, use of chain lengths up toN=512 allows a rough estimation of crossover scaling functions for the crossover from Ising to mean-field exponents. The order-disorder transit…

Thermodynamics of a polymer blend solution system studied by gel permeation chromatography and viscosity

1999

Binary and ternary interaction parameters and their derivatives have been calculated with the Flory-Huggins formalism developed for a ternary polymer system. The equilibrium compositions of the ternary system tetrahydrofuran/polybutadiene/polystyrene that forms two phases in equilibrium at 25°C have been used to solve the binodal equations. With this set of parameters, the viscosimetric interaction parameters have been computed. For the sake of comparison, the experimental viscosimetric parameter has been determined from intrinsic viscosity data of a polymer (3) in a "binary solvent" (solvent + polymer (2)). It has been clearly shown that composition-dependent parameters are necessary to re…

Polymer Incompatibility Caused by Different Molecular Architectures: Modeling via Chain Connectivity and Conformational Relaxation

2009

The calculation of phase diagrams for blends of linear and branched polymers made up of identical monomeric units is modeled using an approach that subdivides the mixing process into two steps: i) contact formation between the different components, keeping their chain conformations and the volume of the system constant; and, ii) relaxation of the macromolecules into their equilibrium state by molecular rearrangements. It is assumed that step (ii) causes shape-induced polymer incompatibility and that the degree of branching can be quantified in terms of the volumes the isolated coils of the branched polymer occupy in relation to the volume the linear product with the same molecular weight oc…

Novel antimicrobial ultrathin structures of zein/chitosan blends obtained by electrospinning

2009

Abstract This paper describes the formulation, morphology and biocide properties of novel antimicrobial electrospun zein based ultrathin fiber structures. From the results, it was found that the electrospun fibers of zein can turn the material into a new strong antimicrobial ultrathin-structured system due to retention of remnant amounts of trifluoroacetic acid as determined by ATR–FTIR spectroscopy. Unfortunately, this system may be considered to yield very aggressive high acidic media due to release of the strong acid, which causes the antimicrobial behavior. Nevertheless, since biocide properties are more desirable at mild acidic conditions, blending zein with the natural antimicrobial c…
